  • Clinical gentle rounding of the back rather than gibbus
  • Xray required to rule out Sheurman’s or Congenital

  • All have some risk of neurologic compromise & progression

Classification of Congenital Kyphosis

Sheurman’s Disease

  • Aka juvenile rigid  kyphosis
  • Secondary to growth disturbance of the endplates

  • Typical (Thoracic)
    • Rigid thoracic kyphosis in juvenile or adolescent spine
    • Apex T7 –T9, compensatory lordosis of the cervical & lumbar spine
    • Incidence .4-10%
    • Onset approximately 10 years of age
  • Thoracolumbar
    • Apex T1- T12
  • Lumbar
    • Constant backache
    • Typically  males
    • Hard labour & athletics are associated
    • Reduction in Lordosis
