Acromioplasty

Principles

  1. Resection of coracoacromial ligament
  2. Removal of anterior lip of acromion
  3. Removal of part of acromion anterior to anterior border of clavicle
  4. Removal of distal 1 to 1.5cm of clavicle if significant degenerative changes found

Indications

  • Treatment of impingement syndrome
    • Failure of nonoperative treatment for 6 to 12 months
    • Recurrent symptoms
  • Associated with rotator cuff surgery

Preop planning & consent

  • Adequate imaging (x-ray, us ± mri)
    • to confirm diagnosis
    • diagnose associated cuff pathology
    • exclude other pathology (eg. Cervical spine)
  • Have available
    • Appropriate equipment for cuff repair
