Causes of Sub-periosteal New Bone

  • Periostitis
    • Associated with infection, osteomyelitis & subperiosteal abscess
  • Sub-periosteal haematoma
  • Syphilitic periostitis (diffuse or localised)
  • Ewings sarcoma (onion skin)
  • Osteoid osteoma (may result in localised thickening)
  • Hypertrophic pulmonary osteodystrophy associated with COAD, clubbing, cyaotic disorders
  • Stress fractures
  • Venous ulcers or stasis ulcers result in periosteal thickeing beneath ulcer
  • Caffeys disease
    • Bone deposition sub-periostealy over wide area of many bones
    • infantsless than 6/12, often have fever & resolves spontaneously
