Causes of Sub-periosteal New Bone
- Periostitis
- Associated with infection, osteomyelitis & subperiosteal abscess
- Sub-periosteal haematoma
- Syphilitic periostitis (diffuse or localised)
- Ewings sarcoma (onion skin)
- Osteoid osteoma (may result in localised thickening)
- Hypertrophic pulmonary osteodystrophy associated with COAD, clubbing, cyaotic disorders
- Stress fractures
- Venous ulcers or stasis ulcers result in periosteal thickeing beneath ulcer
- Caffeys disease
- Bone deposition sub-periostealy over wide area of many bones
- infantsless than 6/12, often have fever & resolves spontaneously
